I’m stressed about budgeting, sharing space with strangers – and being lonely
I’m off to university in a couple of weeks. I have had a brilliant summer in London and abroad with my school friends – even my family have been all right – and I am feeling a bit sad about going off to a new town far away. I’m worried about budgeting and not looking forward to sharing a kitchen and a bathroom with strangers. I’d appreciate any steers on what to focus on, and how to deal with loneliness.

I loved your line ‘even my family have been all right’ – perhaps your imminent absence made their hearts grow fonder!
Now then, don’t you worry. For a start, the last thing you’re likely to experience at uni is loneliness – if anything, the complete opposite. Not only will you be surrounded by people the same age as you, you’ll all be in the same boat – away from home for the first time, adapting to a new way of life – learning to live and budget independently, not to mention getting to grips with your degree courses. Trust me, you’ll swiftly bond with each other and in a week or so you’ll wonder what on earth you were worried about.
Budgeting isn’t hard, Olivia – it’s just basic arithmetic. Work out how much you have available to spend each week, and divide it into accommodation, food; and… fun. Put some pub money aside – you’ll need it!
Remember that you can talk to your family and London friends whenever you want. But some of the friendships you’re about to make will last a lifetime. As long as you don’t hog the shower!
